How do you successfully perform a flick trick in Tony Hawk Ride?

No matter how much I try I can not perform a flick trick in Tony Hawk Ride. In the training, it tells me to do 3 flick tricks but I cant even perform 1. It says to perform a flick trick you must do an ollie, and rotate the board left and right. Ive tried doing that but my character will either end up landing the board sideways causing him to fall off the board or will perform a different move instead. I quit the training and started the career mode but now it wants me to do flick tricks in the career mode too. Ive tried rotating the board left or right quickly after doing an ollie and ive also tried rotating it left or right slowly after doing an ollie but still no luck.
